Essential Oils

General Guidelines for Use and Application

Techniques for Generally Using Essential Oils with your Dog or Cat

  • Use essential oils aromatically and topically to start with your pet. Do not start your pet on essential oils orally unless under the direction of a Veterinarian.
  • Petting technique: After diluting the essential oils, transfer them from the roller bottle to your hands and apply them along the spine or over the affected area or area of interest. You can also apply to the feet or over the ears.
  • Aromatic Use: Use a water diffuser in the room and start with just 1-2 drops of essential oils. You can increase to 3-4 drops of the essential oil or blend if your pet is tolerating it. In addition, you can mist water containing essential oils over bedding or into the air, or even spray it onto yourself. If your pet responds positively to the scent, you can also apply the oil topically using the petting technique.

Carrier Oil Recommendation:
We recommend mixing the essential oil with fractionated coconut oil (FCO), which is a thin and odorless oil that can be easily absorbed by the skin. FCO helps to spread the essential oil over a larger surface area of the body. By diluting the essential oil with FCO, the absorption rate is reduced, resulting in a longer-lasting effect, less evaporation, and a lower risk of sensitivity. dōTERRA's FCO goes through the same rigorous testing as their other oils and is safe to use on pets.
