Making homemade dog treats can be fun, nutritious, and rewarding for your dog. Here’s a simple and healthy recipe that incorporates wholesome ingredients dogs love:
Peanut Butter & Pumpkin Dog Treats
Ingredients:
- 2/3 cup pumpkin puree (not pie filling, just plain pumpkin)
- 1/4 cup peanut butter (make sure it's xylitol-free, as xylitol is toxic to dogs)
- 2 large eggs
- 2 1/2 cups whole wheat flour (or oat flour for a grain-free option)
- 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon (optional, dogs tend to love it, but avoid in large quantities)
Instructions:
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- In a large bowl, mix together the pumpkin puree, peanut butter, and eggs until smooth.
- Gradually add in the flour (and optional cinnamon), stirring until it forms a dough. If the dough is too sticky, add a bit more flour.
- Roll out the dough on a floured surface to about 1/4 inch thick. Use cookie cutters to cut into shapes, or just cut into squares.
- Place the cutouts onto the prepared baking sheet.
- Bake for 20-25 minutes, until golden brown and firm.
- Allow the treats to cool completely before serving.
Storage:
Store the treats in an airtight container at room temperature for about a week, or freeze for longer storage.
This recipe is great because it contains dog-friendly ingredients, and you can tweak it to include beneficial ingredients like flaxseed or mushroom extract like Lion’s Mane or Cordyceps if you want to add extra health benefits!
